At the Rehabilitation Specialists we specialise in working with individuals who are Deaf and Hard of hearing. We have a team of Deaf Aware Occupational Therapists, some of which know Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and/or are Deaf or Hard of Hearing themselves. We have a lot of knowledge and experience about Deaf community and culture and their support needs including communication, assistive technology, building functional capacity and increasing engagement and participation.
We provide assessments, intervention and reports for the following areas:
- Assistive technology (eg. Deaf friendly fire alarms, alarms clocks and baby cry monitors, video doorbells, CCTV, smart watches, iPads, etc.)
- Supporting letters and plan recommendation assessment and reports
- Complex Functional Assessment and Reports
- Initial Needs Assessments and Reports
- Installation and set up of Assistive Technology (including providing education on how to use these and where to go for support)
- Capacity building intervention (eg. engaging in therapy to build independent living skills, strategies to assist with communication and engagement in the community etc.)
- Assistance to apply for Job Access and identifying your support needs in the workplace
- Advocating for individual support needs
