Functional Capacity Evaluations

Functional Capacity Evaluations

Functional Capacity Evaluations or FCEs are a systematic process of measuring, recording and analysing an individual’s ability to perform their pre-injury duties, activities of daily living and their proposed vocational status. These tests are carried out by qualified personnel including Exercise Physiologists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.

FCE’s can assist to:

  • Establish an individuals functional capacity in order to support upgrades in return to work, and/or to identify suitable duties.
  • Establish whether an individual is fit to return to their pre-injury duties, and if not, make recommendations for next steps.
  • Determine the factors impacting on / limiting an individual’s capacity (for example, where there are multiple injuries).
  • Track changes in function before/after a work hardening program or other intervention.
  • Obtain objective  data to an individual’s abilities and restrictions to create a profile of their capacity to assist with job matching to a suitable vocational option.
  • Provide results to determine whether an individual can return to work immediately, return to work on suitable or modified duties, or if they require further rehabilitation in order to reach the return to work goal.

The Rehabilitation Specialists have developed an FCE specifically targeted at desk based employees to objectively measure their typing, mousing, sitting and other functional capacities specifically related to a desk based role.  We are also able to complete the FCE in the workplace, ensuring testing is specific to the job and using the tools used as part of an individual’s role.
